Maharashtra is one of the most vibrant and diverse states in India. Located in the western region of the country, Maharashtra is the second-most populous state in India after Uttar Pradesh. With a rich cultural and historical legacy, it is often referred to as the “Gateway to India.” Maharashtra is known for its beautiful beaches, majestic mountains, and rich heritage sites.

Geography

Maharashtra is situated on the western coast of India, surrounded by the Arabian Sea to the west, the Indian states of Goa and Karnataka to the south, Telangana to the southeast, Chhattisgarh to the east, Gujarat to the north, and Madhya Pradesh to the northeast. The state is divided into six regions – Vidarbha, Marathwada, Western Maharashtra, Konkan, Pune, and Nashik.

The state is home to several beautiful and scenic hill stations such as Matheran, Mahabaleshwar, Lonavala, Khandala, and Panchgani. The Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, run through the state, offering a range of biodiversity and wildlife. The state also has several beautiful rivers flowing through it, such as the Godavari, Tapi, and Krishna.

Culture and Heritage

Maharashtra has a rich cultural and historical heritage. The state is home to several historic sites, including the Ajanta and Ellora caves, which are UNESCO World Heritage sites. The state’s capital city, Mumbai, is known for its iconic landmarks such as the Gateway of India, the Marine Drive, and the Elephant  Caves.

Maharashtra is known for its diverse and vibrant festivals, which are celebrated with great enthusiasm and zeal. Some of the popular festivals celebrated in the state include Ganesh Chaturthi, Diwali, Holi, and Dussehra.
